2012 Crossfit Games – this Weekend!

The 2012 Crossfit Games are being broadcast from California on ESPN3 this weekend with first prize purses of $250,000. Aussie Chad Mackay is currently in 1st place after Day 1!

We’ve all heard about how effective interval training is for burning fat and increasing fitness.  Crossfit challenges the traditional definition of fitness by using interval training and functional exercises to create the most adaptable athletes. The Crossfit phenomenon finally introduces functional exercise to the mainstream fitness market and the results can be seen in the sculpted bodies of actors from movies like “300” and the TV mini-series Spartacus who all used variations of Crossfit training for their filming preparation.

Says Crossfit founder, Greg Glassman, “CrossFit fitness comes through moulding men and women that are equal parts gymnast, Olympic weightlifter, and multi-modal sprinter or ‘sprintathlete.’ Develop the capacity of a novice 800-meter track athlete, gymnast, and weightlifter and you’ll be fitter than any world-class runner, gymnast, or weightlifter. Let’s look at how CrossFit incorporates metabolic conditioning (‘cardio’), gymnastics, and weightlifting to forge the world’s fittest men and women.” Read more…

A Workout of the Day (WOD) is posted each day on the Crossfit website and is scalable for anyone of all age groups and abilities – or you can choose from one of the previous workouts you may have missed.  For workouts go to www.crossfit.com or join your local Crossfit affiliate.

Caution: A word of warning if attempting these workouts without a fitness professional present.  At the very least, watch the demo video for each WOD paying special attention to technique to avoid injury.  If performed incorrectly, any exercise can cause injury and many Crossfit exercises are quite challenging, especially if you’re not used to them.  Most importantly, don’t let your ego write cheques your body can’t cash!  Work your way up to the prescribed weights from something you’re comfortable with.
